Happy birthday, Melissa! We love you and pray for all the best for you. :-)

  • First Day of School

    First Day of School

Once again, the first day of school is upon us. Time for the ritualistic “first day of school picture” taken on the front lawn before the Japanese maple tree.

And the ritualistic posting of it here. :-)

Oregon Miniature Aircraft Squadron Air Show

Jamison, Melissa, and I went to the Oregon Miniature Aircraft Squadron air show today. For a suggested parking donation of $5, how could we go wrong?

We had a blast! We saw combat, helicopters, boats, RC cars, large planes, ducted-fan “jets,” and a crazy-looking flying “skydiver.” These are just a few of the pictures I took.

  • Holiday E-Mail to Willy

    Dear Willy,

We are so happy to have another Logan boy in our home over the holidays. We will be heading into the hills to cut a Christmas tree and then decorate it. We can also go to zoo lights to hear Melissa sing, eat, watch the Christmas ships on the waterfront, make puzzles, eat, play games, eat, go for drive bys of Christmas lights, enjoy hot apple cider, watch a goey Christmas movie or perhaps snowball express, eat a few mandarins, perhaps play in the snow (we can always hope), play ping pong and Foosball, eat, read nostalgic Christmas stories, eat and just enjoy being together. Plan on building Legos and making paper airplanes! There should also be time to just relax with a good book.

Please bring any good vegan recipes you would like us to make. Ashley would be happy and we are trying to cook more that way. Also if a few are vegan and gluten free you would be my favorite nephew.

Tell your mom thank you for sharing you with us. Are you heading down with the girls on Wednesday?

Safe travels and we look forward to seeing you.

    Suzi

Looks like our holiday plans are stuffed full of fun. ;-)

  • First Day of School

    First Day of School

Labor Day was yesterday so today must be the first day of school. Melissa is a Junior which makes her an upperclassman. Jamison is in 5th grade which makes him awesome. Ashley and Heather go to college later this month, Ashley returning and Heather starting.

In honor of the occasion, we take pictures and post them for our friends and family to see.

  • Melissa E-Mails From Nepal, #2

I just checked my e-mail and found another from Melissa:

    hey dad,
yah i spoke too soon…i now have bedbugs and am covered in them. at training camp dave the leader gave us a list of things we are going to give up and we had to circle three that would be hard. i circled a comfortable bed and i got bedbugs, i also circled normal food and i havent been feeling the best and i circled appearance and at training camp i showered twice and today is the first time i have got to drop of laundry so i smell horrible. but i guess i need to get over what i said i would.

today we went to a school and performed for a bunch of kids and afterwards they swarmed around us and talked to us. i had never felt so overwhelmed in a crowd of people..but at least they spoke english so it wasnt as hard as other villages we have gone to. then we went to a hindu temple and walked around and we saw four cremation ceremonies. the first three were already started so it wasnt gross but the fourth body i saw them light and the smell was horrible. its much worse then getting your blood drawn, i felt so sick. just so you know i do not want to be cremated it is a horrible thing to watch. and the gross part was after the body was ashes they poured water over them and dumped them in the river and then little kids were swimming around and throwing the ashes like it was normal thing to see and do, which i guess it is for them.

something cool is that there are wild monkeys. im not sure if i told you that but i really like them. also did i tell you i cant call? well if i didnt i just wanted to let you know that. but i love you and ill write again when i have time.

Sounds like Melissa’s having fun and learning lots. I hope she’s taking lots of pictures and writing in her journal so she can tell me all about it when she gets home.

  • Melissa E-Mails From Nepal

Melissa e-mailed us from Nepal. Here’s an excerpt:

how are you? i miss you so much!

so i finally got to nepal and its not what i expected. im not really sure what i was expecting but i really love it here.

driving around in the car is a little scary. you could shake hands with the person in the car next to you easily.

the hotel we are staying in is really cute. they say we might have bedbugs and cockroaches but i havent seen them yet. we eat and cook meals on the top of the hotel and then you can look down on the city. the streets are filled with trash and little kids are running around outside at two in the morning.

the kids have already broken my heart. i love them and they are so cute.

She and Ashley have two more weeks in Kathmandu and then they go to Pokhara. I’m looking forward to the next installment.

  • It’s Friday!

Here are a few random updates. Ignore or enjoy!

    • I rode my bike to work again today. That makes four times this week (I missed Monday because I couldn’t find the key to my bike lock; solved that by buying a combination bike lock). Even with biking to work, it’s amazing how much other driving I do. I’m working on decreasing that, too.
    • The weather is beautiful!
    • Melissa leaves this afternoon for Chicago and then in a week for Nepal. I’m going to miss her. I’m used to having Ashley out of the house after a year in college (though we saw her at least once a month) and then her year in the Dominican Republic, but Melissa and her love for yellow have been a constant part of my life. The next 6 weeks will be rough…
    • Note to self: remove a container’s lid before attempting to dispense liquid into said container.
    • Did I mention the weather is beautiful?
  • Disneyland Video

Here’s a video I recorded with my cell phone at Disneyland during my sabbatical. Not bad…

It perfectly captures the feeling of sabbatical at about 1:03. ;-)
