    Cannon Beach

We took a quick trip to Cannon Beach because the weather was so nice. We walked from W 2nd street to just beyond Haystack Rock and back. On the way back,1The first time… I took a picture every ten paces to create a time lapse2Beach time-lapse inspired by smelliot at GIFtychs. of the walk.3I also created an animated gif of the walk, but beware — it’s 7.29 MB huge!

Because of a disappearing cell phone, we walked the route a second time, retracing our steps and calling the cell phone’s number. Amazed that no one answered the phone4Except when I misdialed once…Hi, Heather! we again searched the coat, and found it!

    Update. Here’s an mp4 version. It’s only 355 KB.

  • Our Last Day in Cannon Beach

Our Last Day in Cannon Beach

Today was our last day at Cannon Beach, at least for this trip. When we awoke, the day was gray, but there were more people walking the beach than yesterday when it was beautiful. We ate breakfast, cleaned up, packed up, and then took some group shots. The jump shots of just the kids worked out a little better than the ones we tried of all of us. Trying to have all of us jump at the exact instant the self-timer fired the shutter proved to be difficult

We walked along the beach into town, enjoyed a visit to Insomnia, visited some galleries, and ate pizza. Then, because Ashley and Carin arrived later yesterday, we went back to the tidal pools. The water seemed lower today, so we were able to visit rocks we couldn’t yesterday. ‘Course, I was also able to get trapped on a rock while a few large waves rolled in, the last one covering the rock I was marooned on, soaking my shoes and the bottom of my pants. The view of the sea stars was worth it, though.

Cannon Beach is a favorite destination of ours. We’re always looking forward to our next visit.

Low tide was sometime between noon and one, so we headed back to Haystack Rock to find some sea anemones, crabs, and sea stars. As a bonus, we got our feet and pants wet.

  • Early January Trip to Cannon Beach

Early January Trip to Cannon Beach

As is our practice, we took a quick day trip to Cannon Beach. Many years we reserve New Year’s Day for this expedition, but postponed it a few days this year because of multiple sore throats in the family.

The Oregonian readers will recognize this as a beautiful January beach day, relatively warm with only light winds. What surprised us was how few people were on the beach.

We visited the Jeffrey Hull gallery and the toy store. We enjoyed drinks at Insomnia, running into new friends from the Faith family. And we visited the beach at Tolovana Beach, South Pacific Street (right by Haystack Rock), and West Second Street.

I broke in my new tripod taking a picture of all of us. Good times! :-)

    Day Trip to Cannon Beach

To escape the heat, we planned a day trip to Cannon Beach. Turns out, it only got to 79°F in Hillsboro so there wasn’t much heat to escape, but we still had a great day in Cannon Beach.

    Cannon Beach

We took a quick trip to the Oregon coast this afternoon, visiting Cannon Beach.

After arriving, we ate a quick picnic lunch in the car and then headed to the beach. Bundled-up people and the happiest dogs greeted us as we walked toward Haystack Rock. I was taking pictures of the clouds and noted, “Looks like it could rain soon.” I turned to continue on my way to Haystack Rock. Suzi wisely suggested we head back. Even though we did so immediately, it rained and hailed on us before we reached the sea wall — and then it stopped.

We toured our favorite art gallery, selected our favorites, and left them behind. We explored the nearby toy store, playing with bristlebots and finding a large metal bug sculpture that would look great (ha!) in the garden.

On the way home, we discovered the storm that had dumped rain and hail on us, snowed on the passes of the coastal mountains.

Another great day on the Oregon coast!
