  • How to Puddle Stomp

    How to Puddle Stomp

It’s springtime in Oregon. The parking lots are filled with opportunities, uh, puddles. Taking advantage of these opportunities is easy:

    • Survey the scene to ensure no one is watching.
    • Stomp with only one foot at a time. Stomping with both feet results in soggy shoes and soppy socks (if you’re wearing any).
    • Lift the “off” foot about six inches to keep it above the splash zone.
    • Avoid puddles deeper than about 2-3 inches unless you’re wearing waterproof boots.

On second thought, there’s only one rule for puddle stomping:

    • Stomp! Stomp! Stomp!

For advanced springtime fun, consider dancing in the rain.

  • Smelling Like a Dog

Wednesday in Hillsboro brought misting rain and sprinkles. Not enough wet stuff to need an umbrella (does an Oregonian ever need an umbrella?). Not enough moisture to cancel my walk to Starbucks.

The misting started right before noon so I noticed immediately that “first rain smell.”1There’s actually a word for it: petrichor. You know what I mean. After a few weeks of dry, rain releases a wonderful aroma from the thirsty earth. As I walked along, I learned a couple of things:

First, rain smell is not a single aroma; it’s a fragrance counter of scents, with different surfaces contributing to the melange. There’s the dust of the sidewalk, the oily, rubbery, asphalty blend of the road, the woody smell of the bark dust, the pungent smell of juniper, the green, grassy smell of the, uh, green grass.

Second, humid air seems to transmit other smells better. The spray paint outgassing from the SpeedRack site, the pancakes, and bacon from IHOP. When it’s raining, everything smells better.

I wonder if this is just a taste (sniff?) of what it’s like to be a dog.

  • Morning Observations

Forgiveness feels so good. Why do I take so long to ask for it? And to recognize that I need it?

Rain. Haven’t seen much of it recently. I’m glad it’s here. I’m glad it waited until after all the leaves came down and were picked up. And after I put up my Christmas lights.

Mmm… Peppermint white chocolate mocha. Now that it’s after Thanksgiving, I can enjoy the “festive flavors.”

Customizable Starbucks gift cards. Cool! Here’s mine. I’d love to be able to order a custom white mug, too. Guess I could just take a Sharpie to the “generic” mugs Starbucks already sells.

    Dancing in the Rain

Blogging has been light as we’ve been enjoying my sabbatical. So far, we’ve toured parts of Alabama, Georgia, Florida, South and North Carolina, and Tennessee.

The weather in Charlotte is a little extreme right now, but perfect for dancing in the rain.
