    Commute by Bike in Folsom

I brought my bike along as we deliver Melissa to college so I could bike to work in Folsom. That’s a first for me.

I was able to ride along the American River bike trail part of the way, so I took some pictures. I made a mistake, took a wrong turn, and ended up going over the freeway, so I could see all the poor drivers trapped in their “cages.” So sad on such a beautiful day… :-(

Update. Of course, the commute goes both directions, but after work, I biked to brother Bob’s house and enjoyed his cool pool with the rest of the family (but not Bob, but that’s a story for another day). Ah, the perfect way to end a day. Grandma and Grandpa brought food over for a picnic supper. Nice!

I then biked along Lake Natoma back to the Logan family “bed and breakfast.”

    Summary:

    Actual Time Moving1:26:37 h:m:s
    Distance20.14 miles
    Average Speed14.0 miles per hour
    Maximum Speed30.4 miles per hour

Biking in the Mist: Lessons Learned

Even though today’s weather forecast is rain, I pedaled my bike to work. Along the way, hearing raindrops sprinkle on my helmet, I learned a few things:

    • When the weather rock is damp, the humidity is 100%. Don’t expect much evaporative cooling. It’s better to slow down.
    • Drinking an extra-hot white mocha while riding may save time over sitting down to drink it, but it made me hot. It’s better to keep the ride slower or take the time to enjoy it properly. Skipping it isn’t really an option. ;-) c[_]
    • Handlebars are not cup holders, but brake levers make great foam catchers.
    • Covered bike parking makes biking on questionable days worth the risk. Thanks, Intel!
    • Regardless of the weather, biking to work is fun.

And worse weather makes for better bragging rights. Day 12 on the bike this year.

  • Another Good Friday

    Another Good Friday

It’s Friday! The weather is gorgeous. Here are a few of the shots I took on the ride to work.1Yes, taking pictures slows down the commute. For that matter, so does stopping at Starbucks. At least taking pictures keeps me from showing up to work all sweaty.

I hope you have a wonderful day.

This is day 8 on the bike this year.

    All Moved In

My three boxes,1There’s another six boxes of archival tools sitting in storage for me to review, catalog, photograph, and recycle. monitor, and stands were delivered last Friday.2At first, to the wrong cube, but that’s another story…
Yes, that’s my favorite site in the browser. Aren’t you glad I’m finally moved in so I can go back to taking (and publishing) pictures of the sky? ;-)
I went in this morning to get everything in its place so I could hit the ground running Monday morning.

All my cables, cords, and locks are in place. Just a couple of zip ties will make it tidy.

Update. I just bought a cube-warming gift for myself: a Spathiphyllum plant. I think I’ll put it on the Intel 2400-baud modem on the back shelf.

  • Last Day at Jones Farm

    Last Day at Jones Farm

It’s my last day at Intel’s Jones Farm campus. Monday, I start at the Hawthorn Farm campus.

I don’t think my cube has ever been this clean. No tchotchkes, no loose papers. I even corralled the dust bunnies behind the monitor.

    Goodbye JF3-2-H6. It’s been fun!

    Intel Hawthorn Farm Walking Routes

I’m moving Intel campuses1“Campi”? Nope, that would be sometimes frowned upon. :-( later this week — from Jones Farm to Hawthorn Farm. The Jones Farm campus is great for walking. It’s time for a quick visit to Google maps to see what Hawthorn Farm has to offer. I see what might be nice 1.2 and 1.5 mile walks.2Okay, the southern leg of the 1.2-mile route doesn’t look quite as nice. At least, not from the satellite. :-)

I wonder what walking is available indoors at Hawthorn Farm other than the treadmills in the exercise center.

My New Cube at Intel’s Hawthorn Farm Campus

Today was the open house for those of us who will be moving into a remodeled floor at Intel’s Hawthorn Farm campus. I went, found my new cube, and took some pictures.1And enjoyed some live blues and some food. :-)

It doesn’t look much like the Intel Conan O’Brien visited a while back.2“Can you say lifeless environment?” No gray walls, no gray cubicles, no blue-gray carpeting.

It’s part of Intel’s continuing effort to have attractive, functional workspaces. The walls are a little higher than Intel’s first attempts at this, and there are more small, unreservable conference rooms.3These are awesome. If you can find an empty conference room you don’t need to worry that you’ll get bumped by someone with a reservation. It will look and sound a lot different next week when it’s filled with people, computers, and activity.

I think I’ll like it.4At least, I hope I’ll like it. Change can be fun. I’ll have to add a picture once I get moved in.

I flew home with Melissa. She was good company and put up with my continual picture taking.

  • Solar at Intel’s Jones Farm Campus

Solar at Intel’s Jones Farm Campus

Intel is installing solar panels at many of its sites. I watched the progress at the Jones Farm campus where I work. Today is the first day all the parking beneath the panels is available — my car is somewhere under the structure on the right. And it’s a sunny day to boot!

In the Oregon summer heat, those of us who get to work early will get prime shaded parking places. In the rain, we’ll still have to dodge the drips — there are gaps between the panels that water drizzles through.

Somewhere there is (or will be) a web page charting how much electricity the panels generate. I’ll update this post when I find it.

Hmm. Is this just a high-tech carport? ;-)

Hugh MacLeod created a “doodle” for Intel. In fact, it’s a series of doodles.

I love ’em! Which one’s your favorite?

With luck, I’m going to score a signed, fine art print.1Update: Nope, didn’t get one… I’ve already used the blank one as a frame for aisle signs.
