A while back (a long while back) I wrote about Allerca’s hypoallergenic cats, snarking about their low, low, LOW price of only $3,950. I’m happy to say, times have changed. No, the prices aren’t lower — they’re higher, much higher¹. Allerca now lets you select your cat’s coat color, markings and sex (though “fixing” is still mandatory).
Wikipedia has some interesting information on cat allergies and hypoallergenic cats. Our experience somewhat matches. For example, Mother-in-law Dear has a Himalayan cat that doesn’t set off Melissa’s cat allergies, yet Wikipedia doesn’t list Himalayans as less likely to provoke an allergic reaction. Also, this past Sunday, Melissa and I were shopping at PetSmart for a goldfish (“Sushi”). Even though we can’t bring one home (I try not to make the same mistake twice), we “window shop” the cats they have up for adoption. Melissa pointed to a dark-brown cat and said she could never have one like it. When I asked why, she said, “Dark cats like that affect me more.” Wikipedia agrees.
