As part of the census process, the U.S. Government also collects more detailed demographic information, the American Community Survey. This data is available to view on a map at the county level.

Stamen Design’s Watercolor Maps
Stamen Design created an online map that looks like watercolor paintings. You can zoom in and out and pan around, same as other online maps.

Intel Hawthorn Farm Walking Routes
I’m moving Intel campuses1“Campi”? Nope, that would be sometimes frowned upon. :-( later this week — from Jones Farm to Hawthorn Farm. The Jones Farm campus is great for walking. It’s time for a quick visit to Google maps to see what Hawthorn Farm has to offer. I see what might be nice 1.2 and 1.5 mile walks.2Okay, the southern leg of the 1.2-mile route doesn’t look quite as nice. At least, not from the satellite. :-)
I wonder what walking is available indoors at Hawthorn Farm other than the treadmills in the exercise center.

Great Circle Routes: PDX – AMS
Great circle routes fascinate me; they’re so unintuitive plotted on the two-dimensional maps we normally see.
Heather flew from Portland, Ore. to Amsterdam last week, so I thought I’d map her flight.
She flew over Washington, British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Nunavut Territory, Greenland, Iceland, and Scotland (assuming the flight was straight, probably not a safe assumption).

Intel Jones Farm Walking Routes
I mapped a few simple walking routes in and around the Intel Jones Farm campus. Imagine my surprise to find the routes have nice distances of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 miles.
Now I have more exercise options. ;-)
