Jamison and I head to Maryhill 2015

Jamison and I headed up the Gorge yesterday to watch the finals of the Maryhill Festival of Speed. It’s nice to live so close.

Fortunately, the temperatures only got to 103, with overcast and a breeze. I can’t imagine how hot it must have been in the leather racing suits and full-face helmets.

A thrill a minute there… or maybe more like a thrill a nanosecond!! Have you tried that yourself? Way too much for me but like car races and horse races, it would be fun to watch.

Jamison and I have gone down a little hill in a neighborhood near ours. I identified a few issues I need to resolve:

    1. Going faster than I can run means I can’t just jump off to stop. I’ve done that a few times, and it’s petrifying, especially, since…
    2. I can’t slow down other than foot braking and I can’t even do that once I’m going too fast (exactly when I’d want to slow down).
    3. Once I get going above a certain speed, the board can develop what’s called “speed wobble,” that is, rapidly oscillating back and forth. This is a good way to meet the pavement. To see what this is, watch the first ten seconds of this awesome skateboard helmet ad. I don’t want to leave you with just the danger view of downhill longboard. Watch Louis Pilloni skating the Italian Alps to see one of downhilling’s best in some of the most beautiful scenery.

Our local community college has a Longboarding 101 class that teaches basic skills, including better ways to slow down and stop. Jamison would like to take the course, and I think it would be a lot of fun, too.
